The "Old Fort" sat encircled by a chain link fence, with power lines and modern reminders at every side. It is very difficult to obtain any feel of the history of the Fort due to these modern intrusions.

It is a known fact that the structure was taken apart and moved, but as of today, documentation of the original location, how far the structure was move, or where any of the outbuildings or other structures associated with the Fort were located has not been found. The search continues, though, and any information found will help us to better understand the history of Fort Yargo.
While written evidence is scarce, we have been given much anecdotal evidence from members of the Hill family, who owned the property and structure of Fort Yargo until it was given to the State of Georgia. The information that was provided indicated that when the elderly Mr. Hill was a child, he remembered going to the Fort, and there were the remains of a stockade wall, and that the fort was "huge".
No proper protection for the fort existed, and one of the major concerns was for the continued safety of the structure. Over the years, the structure had been repeatedly vandalized, and much of the donated furniture, tools, and accoutrements had been stolen or destroyed. It was easily broken into, and many parties were apparently enjoyed at the expense of the furnishings.
Members of the Coalition of Historical Trekkers gathered at the fort and built proper doors and windows for the structure. Since then, break-ins have been almost non-existent.
Today, the fort has been moved to it's new location, and work is underway to restore it in a period correct fashion.
